We are back for the chase! The umpires are back out in the middle, and the players of Trichy Grand Cholas are spreading out on the field. It will be Shivam Singh to open the innings alongside Vineeth VK for Dindigul Dragons. Athisayaraj Davidson will start proceedings with the ball. Let's go...
... The Run Chase ...
A long first innings - Things got off to a very fast start as Trichy brought up 50 in just 4 overs and Rajkumar K was breathing fire. However, then came the drizzle and we had a bit of a prolonged break. Once play resumed, Trichy continued to boss things as skipper Suresh Kumar found his timing. The opening pair added 118 runs to set the tone. Dindigul did make a slight comeback via their spinners, and Varun Chakaravarthy bowled a couple of tidy overs first up on his return, as M Viju Arul was the pick of the bowlers with 2 wickets to his name. Towards the end, Sanjay Yadav's cameo and those three sixes in the same over from Jafar Jamal propelled Trichy to a big total. Right then, the revised target according to DLS for Dindigul Dragons is 199 in 19 overs. It will be a tough chase, but batting conditions seem pristine out there, so you never know. Stay tuned for the chase.
Big score on the board - Despite some rain, Trichy Grand Cholas have managed to put themselves into a great position with that score on the board. Dindigul Dragons did opt to bowl first and will be a tad siappointed with their overall effort, but they did pull things back a bit post the resumption of play.
Just a single to end, and Trichy Grand Cholas finish with 197/4. Full and wide outside off, slower again. Jagatheesan Kousik goes hard at it but edges it down to short third for a single. Viju finishes things off well with the ball.
Jagatheesan Kousik walks out to face the final ball.
OUT! JAFAR JAMAL IS RUN OUT! Back-of-the-hand slower one from M Viju Arul, pitched fuller and wide of the off stump. Sanjay Yadav steps out to drive through covers but is beaten past the outside edge. The batters try to sneak in a bye but Baba Indrajith stays calm and under-arms the throw onto the stumps with Jamal well short of his crease at the striker's end.
1 run, the slog is played by the batter. Results in a run.
A fumble in the deep and the batters come back for the second. However, Jafar Jamal loses his bat at the bowler's end, without planting it inside the crease and it will be called one run short. Slower ball, into the pitch and wide outside off. Jamal slashes it up and over cover-point. Hunny Saini comes in from the deep and fumbles, allowing Jamal to get back on strike.
1 run, the on drive comes out now. The batter gets a run.
FOUR! Viju errs in line and pays the price. Shortish length, angling down leg. Sanjay Yadav swivels and swings it off the hips, over short fine leg and picks up a boundary.
Slower one from around the wicket, full and angled across the off stump and Jamal fails to reach it. There is a late review for a wide not given. Didn't seem a wide to begin with, and Jafar Jamal might have wasted a review here. The third umpire has a look and the ball is passing well within the guideline. Not a wide!
No run, that is left alone for the keeper to collect.
SIX! Too full from Warrier and Jamal takes full toll of it. A low full toss at the toes, Jafar Jamal takes the front leg out and whacks it over to the right of deep mid-wicket for a biggie, the third one of this over.
No run. Play and a miss! The batter wasn't quite sure how to play that one.
SIX! Another one. Hard length, angled into the batter, Jafar swivels onto the back foot and clobbers it away between long on and deep mid-wicket for another six. This is Jamal's first double-digit score of the season, very surprising.
SIX! Bashed away. Length ball on middle and leg, Jafar Jamal just clears the front leg and gives it an all-mighty hack, lofting it over wide long on for a maximum.
No run, beaten! Lovely bowling as the batter is defeated all ends up.
Full and at the toes, Jafar Jamal whips it away without much timing and past square leg for a single.
Jafar Jamal is in at number 5.
OUT! CAUGHT! Another batter by the name of Rajkumar falls prey to the duo of M Viju Arul and Nirankar Sharma. Tight line from Viju, as he hits the hard length and darts it in towards the leg pole. R Rajkumar tries to back away and go across the line, but gets cramped for room and the leading edge is found. The ball lobs towards cover, where Sharma reverse-cups it with ease. Two wickets in the over for Viju.
1 run, the batter comes forward and plays an off drive for a run.
1 run, the batter goes back in the crease and flicks it away through mid wicket for a single.
R Rajkumar is the next batter in.
OUT! CAUGHT! Excellent take in the deep. M Viju Arul bangs it into the surface, bowling it over middle and leg. Rajkumar K stays back and looks to swing it away leg side but gets it high on the bat. The ball sails down to cow corner, where Nirankar Sharma runs to his right and takes a fine running catch. A solid knock from Rajkumar K comes to an end.
M Viju Arul is back in the attack.
Sanjay Yadav contemplates a long while, and takes the review for 'a wide not given,' at the last second. A flatter leg break, wide outside off and angling in a bit. Yadav leaves it alone in hopes of a wide but doesn't get it. The third umpire has a look and finds that it is well within the revised guideline. Review wasted.
FOUR! That's begging to be hit. Dragged well short and down leg, Sanjay Yadav pulls it off the hips and down to fine leg for a boundary.
Yadav gets away with it. Flatter one outside off, it is the googly. Sanjay Yadav goes after it and slices it high towards mid off. The fielder runs in from the deep and it falls well short. Single taken.
1 run, the slog is played by the batter. Results in a run.
Into the home stretch - Righto, we have had 22 out of the 28 games played in the league stage, and all four playoff places are still up for grabs. Next up, there is a flurry of double-headers scheduled to be played over the course of the next three days in Chennai. On Thursday, August 20, we will first see Madurai Panthers take on reigning champions, the Tiruppur Tamizhans, followed by a match between Nellai Royal Kings and the Salem Spartans. Action will begin at 10 am GMT (3.30 pm IST), but you can join us sooner for the build-up as well. Cheers!
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Rajkumar K has been handed the accolade for his stellar knock of 71 off just 42 balls.
The Presentation ceremony...
Proving the worth of wickets - As long as you have wickets in hand, you have a shot as a chasing team and for about half of the chase, Dindigul Dragons managed to do just that. They lost just one wicket early and then Shivam Singh and Baba Indrajith frustrated the opposition bowlers whilst keeping the scoring rate up. Things changed dramatically when Antony Dhas sent both of them back in the same over. Dhas went on to pick another wicket, after which K Easwaran came in and showed his slower-ball mastery, ending with a four-fer. Athisayaraj Davidson also nailed his yorkers at the death, and only RK Jayant could muster up some runs for Dindigul in the latter stages.
A job well done - That is a fine comeback with the ball from Trichy Grand Cholas, as all of their pacers contributed and put on a real display of death bowling. Trichy now break away from that pack of teams on 6 points and zoom to second place, leaving Dindigul Dragons on the verge of being knocked out of the tournament with just 4 points to their name and only one game to play.
Just a single to end, and Trichy Grand Cholas win by 28 runs (DLS). Antony Dhas goes fuller and attacks the stumps, P Bhuvaneswaran hangs deep and looks to swing it leg side but gets a big inside edge onto the pads. The ball rolls away to backward point and they get a single, but there's an appeal for LBW as well. The on-field umpire says no but Suresh Kumar takes the review. Replays and UltraEdge both confirm the inside edge and it stays Not Out.
FOUR! Streaky. Short ball around off, P Bhuvaneswaran reaches out and gives a go at the pull but gets a top edge that sails down to deep third for a boundary.
1 run, the on drive comes out now. The batter gets a run.
Cheeky attempt, but it doesn't come off. Full and angling down leg, RK Jayant gets low and inside the line, looking for the scoop but ends up edging the ball back onto his bod.
No run. Swing and a miss! The batter swings hard at that one but does not connect.
That should do it. Antony Dhas bowls the perfect yorker, pitching it right at the base of the middle stump. RK Jayant just about manages to jam the bat down in time and the target is now out of Dindigul's reach (given there are no extras bowled).
Sensational from Athisayaraj Davidson, and he's given no breathing room to the batters. Another one at the toes, on leg stump. Jayant jams it down to long on for a single. Jayant needs to hit 6 sixes in the last over to win the match for his side.
No run, that is slogged away, but not for any run.
1 run, the batter goes back in the crease and flicks it away through square leg for a single.
And again! Almost an action replay of the last delivery in terms of line and length. Athisayaraj Davidson nails the yorker at the toes. RK Jayant fails to lay a bat on it and it deflects off his boot to short third. Another leg bye. Suresh Kumar again ponders about the review, but the bowler says no.
A review taken more in hope, but it was always going to be Not Out. That's unnecessary from Suresh Kumar. Perfect yorker, right at the toes. P Bhuvaneswaran stands outside the line of leg stump, tries to flick it away but misses and the ball goes off the back leg to short third for a leg bye. There is an appeal for LBW, which is turned down, but it is reviewed. Nothing on UltraEdge and Ball Tracking shows the ball to be pitching well outside the line of leg stump.
A low full toss on the pads, Jayant stays low and swings it away to deep square leg for a single.
No run, that is flicked away but straight to the fielder.
1 run, that is punched off the back foot for a single.
No hat-trick! Slower one around leg, tickled down to fine leg for a single by Bhuvaneswaran.
P Bhuvaneswaran walks out to bat now and he will face the hat-trick ball.
OUT! TIMBER! K Easwaran is on fire as he nails another slower ball and picks up a four-fer. Back-of-the-hand delivery, on a hard length and on off and middle. Nirankar Sharma sets up for the pull, waits a bit before swinging, but is still very early. The ball takes the under-edge and goes back onto the stumps. Easwaran is now on a hat-trick.
Nirankar Sharma is the new batter in.
OUT! CAUGHT! Another one bites the dust and K Easwaran has his third victim. Easwaran hits a good length, taking pace off the ball and bowls it at the stumps. Varun Chakaravarthy stays leg side of the ball and goes after it, but launches it high over mid on. The fielder at long on comes in a few steps and Jagatheesan Kousik makes no mistake.
1 run, the on drive comes out now. The batter gets a run.
Close call, but that's clearly bounced onto the boot. Full and straight. Chakaravarthy looks to jam it out but gets an inner edge onto the boot and the ball lobs back to the bowler. Athisayaraj Davidson pouches it and appeals for a catch. The third umpire is called in to check for a bump-ball and replays confirm that the ball bounced before hitting the boot. Not Out.
1 run, that is punched off the front foot for a single.
Full ball around leg, Chakaravarthy fails to flick it away. The ball hits the front pad and rolls past the strip on the off side. They get a leg bye.
No run, this is driven towards mid on.
That's a poor ball, well down leg and the keeper fumbles it as well, allowing the batters to get a run. It is called a wide. However, it is reviewed, not quite sure why. But hang on, there's a spike on UltraEdge, just a faint one and that's enough to overturn the wide call. It will be a single and the keeper Suresh Kumar, who took the review, saves a run and an extra ball as well.
