Despite losing 36 of their 43 ODI fixtures played against Sri Lanka (W7), Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka when they last took them on in this format; winning by a margin of 137 runs back in September 2018.
This will be the fourth time Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will have faced off at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup; Sri Lanka defeating the Tigers on all three previous occasions.
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have never taken on each other in England before in ODI cricket; Sri Lanka have lost both completed ODIs they’ve played at the County Ground in Bristol whilst Bangladesh beat England by five runs in their only previous outing there in this format (July 2010).
Bangladesh have suffered back-to-back ODI losses, first to New Zealand at The Oval and then to England in Cardiff; they had enjoyed a five-game winning run in the format beforehand however.
Sri Lanka won their most recently completed ODI in England and Wales (v Afghanistan); they haven’t strung together back-to-back wins there since May-June 2014 (W2, L6, T1 since then).
Shakib Al Hasan scored 121 versus England in Bangladesh’s most recent game, the second-highest score by a Bangladesh batsman at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup; only Mahmudullah has scored more in an innings for the Tigers in the tournament (128* v NZ in 2015).
Shakib Al Hasan has now posted four ODI half-centuries in succession; only once before has a batsman managed more in a row for Bangladesh (Tamim Iqbal, 5 in 2012).
Lasith Malinga’s 3/39 last time out against Afghanistan for Sri Lanka meant that the veteran has now moved inside the all-time top five list for most ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup wickets (46), one of three Sri Lankans in that top five (also Muralitharan 68 and Vaas 49).
Mustafizur Rahman is in line to make his 50th ODI appearance for Bangladesh; he’s taken 87 wickets at an average of just 23.4 across his initial 49 outings for the Tigers, including 11 scalps in seven previous games against Sri Lanka.
Mushfiqur Rahim (Bangladesh) registered his highest ever ODI score in a game versus Sri Lanka; recording 144 in a 2018 clash, overall though he averages just 24.3 against Sri Lanka, recording just two other 50+ scores against them in a total of 25 innings.
